January simply is not a good month in Seattle for shooting macros outdoors. IF (and that's a big if) it stops raining enough to want to go outside, there is still the waterlogged ground to contend with, especially if you want to shoot these little guys which grow to a height of about 4". The flower itself is about 3/4 of an inch. Since the stem is so slender, if you get the slightest breeze they move out of the frame!

Snowdrops are one of the first bulbs to bloom - hence the "snow" in their name), and are such a welcome sight in the dead of winter.

So, what's a girl to do? Well, if you're me, you go to the nursery and buy a pot of them for $4 and shoot them in your warm, dry, non-windy office ;) Now granted, the background isn't as interesting as shooting them outdoors....but it's better than nothing!

One of Mom's teacups

My Mom had quite a teacup collection....and it meant a lot to her. Cups given to her by her Aunts, her Mother in Law, and other friends and relatives. Old cups, newer cups.....all kinds of tea cups :) For a long time they were displayed in her kitchen, but when she moved over the summer, I put them on the wall directly above her desk. She loved having them there, front and center, and commented on them often.

Now I have them, and to be honest, I don't know what to do with them. I have 4 of them in our small china "cabinet" and the rest are boxed in the garage for now. I'm really not a teacup sort of girl, but they are a difficult thing to consider re-homing since they held a significant place in her heart.

Anyhow, just played with the Lensbaby (yes again) on this dark and gloomy January day. Tried to "fool" the world into feeling bright and spring-like with this image.

It's a good day :)

Many of you have seen these Wrapped Cord Bracelets all over the internet. Some of them sell for upwards of $200 and more. When I saw the directions, I knew they could'nt be that hard to make, so I headed over to my local bead shop and picked up some inexpensive supplies for my first try. I used 6mm Red Creek Jasper, 1.5mm waxed cotton cord, size D beading thread, and an inexpensive pewter button.

You can find great directions at the Fusion Beads website - which happens to be my local bead shop: FUSION BEADS. Just look under "Beading Techniques."

I had hoped to make it a 5 wrap, but ended up a little shy of beads so it wraps 4 times. Very easy to make, a little time consuming but a relaxing activity that doesn't take much thought. I can't wait to find some amazing buttons for closures, and some new beads for my next one!

And of course since the Lensbaby is still new(ish) to me, I had to use it for shooting the photos :)

As promised, a few of the out-takes from Colin's session. I have a few more gems, but since these images could follow him around online in perpetuity, my better judgement got the best of me. So....they'll stay safely on my hard drive. Since I didn't want to take the time to edit them they're just in a quick B&W.

If you'll notice, I do have him trained well. NEVER take your eyes of the camera, no matter what ;)

Annoying the cat

I wanted to see just HOW sharp the Lensbaby can be if I get the tilt and focus just right, and what better subject than our uncooperative cat. Usually I can't get any eye contact at ALL from her, so I consider this very fortunate.

The result. WHEN I get the tilt and focus right, the sharpness is pretty darned good! All shot with the 2.8 aperture ring (due to it being such a dark day). I'm looking forward to some brighter days so I can try out some of the other aperture rings.

Meet S'mores :) The best cat ever. She's pretty much half dog.....so lovable, but still independent like a cat should be. She's 10 years old (60 in human years) and spends the winter months basically relaxing indoors. Come warmer, drier weather she heads outdoors and acts like a kitten again!

This first one was shot at 1600ISO....I always forget that unlike the olden days, cameras now handle higher ISOs so much better, so it's a pleasant surprise when I shoot at 800 and above.

She loves perching on the windowsill of the office. From the second floor it gives her a birds eye view of our block:

Didn't get both eyes in focus :( but I still like this one for some reason.

....however, we persevered!

Some of you may have been reading this blog since way back when. Can you believe that it's now almost time for Colin to graduate college? He needs headshots for his NYC showcase, and to get him going until he finds an agent who might want them done differently.

We had been planning to do them for months, and they were planned for the day after he got home for break last month since he had oral surgery scheduled for a few days after that.

Unfortunately, the morning after he got home he woke up with an eye infection! Which by the way he is still dealing with after 3 doctor visits and almost 4 weeks later (boo hiss).

So, they got postponed until he was able to pop his contacts in for an hour or so and not have major issues. He didn't want them done with his glasses on.

Of course, during that 12 day period of not being able to take his headshots the weather was dry, and really quite nice for outdoor shots (which he prefers).

Two days before he left to go back to Michigan it was "do or die." And raining. Sometimes heavily, sometimes off and on. GRRRRRR. We tried going out to Pioneer Square, the oldest area of Seattle with lovely old buildings....but the rain was just too much, so back to the house we went.

Colin was clear that he didn't want studio lighting, so we took these in the garage with natural light.

Now, I know that sounds like a lot of "qualifying" but honestly. I just want to remember what a fiasco this was.

To top everything off, as a result of the surgery, he had large greenish yellow bruises below each cheek, and also stitches in his gums which we were visible when he smiled. I had to edit both out, and removing the color of those bruises without turning the cheeks white was quit a task!

So anyhow, I don't know which he'll choose, the faculty will help him with it. He will likely end up with 4 to use depending in what he's going in for. A "legit" (non-smiling) with facial hair, a "commercial" (smiling) with facial hair....as well as one of each without facial hair. Below are my favorites. I've got some fun out-takes too which I'll post (much to Colin's chagrin) another day :)

And it stopped raining long enough for me to shoot a couple of 3/4 shots for me. That smile is infectious!

Just workin' on finding the sweet spot

Yes, I know these are pretty static...but for right now I'm just focusing (he he) on learning how to manipulate the "sweet spot" on this lens.

Love how completely different these two owls are. The Mickey one I got a few years ago, he lives in my office. The second I got as a tree decoration this year, but he may stay out in the office as well. Although......dusting those feathers could be a major pain.

I've rented this, debated it, went back and forth on it, and then Brett gave it to me (along with the macro filters...of course).

Woo hoo.....!

I finally got a chance to play with it a bit today. I'm keeping the tree up for another day or two just so I can practice on some of the ornaments.

For those unfamiliar with what a Lensbaby is, it's a lens with a ball and socket mechanism, similar to (but much less expensive than) a tilt-shift lens. It allows for very selective focus, and lots of creativity! It's a challenge to learn (along with having to manually focus), but I am so excited to have something new to play with :) Thanks Brett!

When we got off the tube (can't recall which stop) there was this metal "map" on the ground surrounding a flag pole. It told the story of London over the years. If the guys hadn't been with me I would have shot it all. Didn't realize how many cigarette butts and gum there was on the ground until I had to clone it all out ;)

Yeah, ok....so I'm behind. Really behind. Quite honestly I just didn't have the desire to work on these until now.

Colin spent a semester studying theatre in London last winter/spring, so of course Brett and I had to go out and visit! I had spent several days there on my own a LONG time ago. Brett had never been, so there was a lot of exploring to do. We also spent 4 days in Edinburgh (LOVE). It was a very fun time, and it was so amazing to see how Colin had easily made London his "home."

The first full day we went to the Tower of London. Just a few snaps from there....

The most meaningful iPhone photo ever - a very personal post

Never did I think the camera in my phone would be so important to me, but without it, I never would have gotten this shot of my Mom. The last photo of her. She died on October 9th. I took this after I took her for a haircut just a couple of weeks prior to that.

She hated having her picture taken....even more than I do. Had I pulled out the "big gun" no way - no how would she have let me take a picture. But....my phone was OK ;)

This is so her. LLBean mock turtleneck (she had this exact shirt in probably 12 colors), fleece vest, reading glasses latched into the top of her shirt. My Mom's "look" in a nutshell.

My Mom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on June 3rd of this year. After many many doctor visits, even more tests, she made the decision to forgo radiation or chemo (surgery was not an option) and live the remainder of her life on her terms. With her underlying health issues there were just too many opportunities for severe complications. She didn't want to spend the rest of her life shuttling to appts, hospital stays, only to *maybe* extend her life a few months.

I have so much admiration for her. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make. I feel very fortunate to have been there for her every step of the way. I became her right hand, and thankfully I have an amazing husband and an equally amazing son who were there for both of us.

We were able to talk about anything and everything those last few months. There was never a sense of urgency to it, just the knowledge that this was the time to put everything to rest, and to give us both the chance to know all we could about each other.

I never in my life thought I could do this. It was the most difficult time in my life, and considering we lost my sister just a year ago, that's saying a lot. I am so very grateful we had this time together, and that I was able to care for her. I have been changed profoundly. I always thought I'd want to go quickly like my Dad did. Now I don't think so. I want to have that last time with my family, sharing, laughing, crying, understanding each other in ways never thought possible. Making those deep and meaningful connections. She died with her grace and dignity intact, as she wished.

I've also learned a lot about human nature. Been very disappointed by those I thought were close to her/me. I have close blood relatives who still have not acknowledged/mentioned her illness let alone her death in any way, even though I have spoken with them since, and given them things of my Mom's. Isn't that just the oddest thing? My Mom was so hurt, and I still hurt for her. I try to get inside their heads to figure out why that is, but I just cannot wrap my brain around it in any way, shape, or form.

On the other hand, we both had some amazing people in our lives the last few months. Kind, understanding, and caring doctors and other health care providers. An amazing Hospice team...most notably the social worker who really helped my Mom and I to "get" each other and understand that the physical things going on with my Mom were not unusual, nor were the emotional things. And I need to mention my husband again who pretty much held down the fort for 4 months. As well as my son who was there for both my Mom and me. Never thought I'd be crying on the phone with my 21 YO, you know? I love them both more than ever.

Wow this is an epic post and a bit on the rambling side...sorry! I miss my Mom something fierce. But, I am doing ok, really I am.

Yes, I know.....it's been a while...again. With good reason though. I'll explain another time.

So, I dusted off the camera, checked it out, realized that it had been so long that both my camera batteries were dead. OIY! Gave them both about 15 minutes each (happy to have two chargers) thinking that would be enough to get me through a short visit to the conservatory. Not so much. I'll be better prepared next time.

It was so dark and rainy, I had to shoot at very high ISOs. But truly, that wasn't the excuse for getting very few keepers. The real reason is that I simply am out of practice. All that said, it felt SO damned good to pick up the camera again!

Here are couple I liked, I'll share a few more in a day or two.

Summer time???

I haven't been shooting much which bums me out no end. Decided I would yesterday after Colin left to go back to Ann Arbor, and after I got some yard work done, but by that time the wind had kicked up like mad. It's still windy here today, but I think I might just pick some stuff from the garden and shoot it indoors instead. While everyone else in the US is sweltering in the heat, we had a non-existant spring, and summer is shaping up to do the same :/ the temp outside is currently 62 degrees, and we've been dodging rain for months on end.

One of our new stations reported that we have had 78 minutes (yes minutes) of temps at 80 degrees this year. Pathetic, isn't it? And even the 70's are hard to come by.

I always feel extremely lucky when I can get macros in focus on a breezy day, just the slightest wind and poof, the subject is out of the frame!

This first one was the most difficult, clusters of tiny flowers (maybe 1/4") on long, thin stems.

I love the smell of lilacs, it's a shame they bloom for such a short time!

Even though I moan and groan about the gray, the drizzle, and the cold, I actually DO love where we live. I've been in Seattle just about my entire life, and can't imagine living somewhere where I'm not surrounded by the luscious green, two mountain ranges, and all the water. Now granted, most of that water isn't warm enough for smart humans to swim in...but still ;)

While Jen was here last week we visited a number of fun places in town. I didn't shoot at many of them (silly me) since I live here. I'll probably share more in the new few days. ANYHOW.....

Little Miss is a very active and oh-so-fun almost 3 year old and Mom thought she'd be happiest holding her session at a playground (which she was). Of course there are lots of distractions at a playground, and lots of equipment as well as other children you want to try to avoid getting into the images. She and the setting kept me on my toes for sure. Spending time with her was a great way to start my day!

So serious...right? Hmm, what IS she thinking about? What has her thinking SO DEEPLY and thoughtfully you ask? Well, to be honest, she's looking for the bird poop on my nose *wink*

I was lucky enough to photograph this little cutie pie when he was just a few weeks old, now he's just celebrated his first birthday and has changed so much! He is a busy little boy (keeping mom on her toes for sure), and so sweet and content.

September this year has just been a lousy month weather wise, so this session was rescheduled a couple of times due to rain. We finally got a dry, but very dark morning for shooting, it was so dark I was driving to the park with my head lights on! Thank goodness for a camera which handles high ISOs well :)

On a more personal note. I cannot believe it's been 3 months since I've posted to the blog! It's been on heck of a summer, my sincerest apologies! In the coming months you will find me posting more macros/florals, and less portraiture. Due to some circumstances I'm finding that I need to limit the number and types of sessions I book. The last 6 weeks or so have been very stressful and oh so busy, it was nice to sit down this weekend and work on some stuff for me! I played around with some new processing, and I'm loving the soft look of it. The past year or so I've been all about pushing color and contrast on my macros, it's nice to try something new for a change!

...I have not fallen off the face of the earth :)

Due to some family health concerns I decided to take a few planned weeks off earlier this month. However, things don't always go exactly as anticipated, so it will be a couple of more weeks before I am back to work on a full time basis.

I am currently accepting a limited number of bookings from June 15 through September 15, so give me a call or drop an email to make sure you get your summer session on the calendar!

In the meantime, I have made the time to shoot macros on a couple of occasions :) I always appreciate it when people design their plantings to compliment each other. The purple of these Allium simply POP off the chartreuse of the shrubs behind them:

This is my second time photographing this adorable little guy! He has such a "little boy" look to him, even though he just turned four months old. I loved hanging out with him and his mom for a bit this morning.

Headed out to the arboretum yesterday to scout out some possible locations for sessions and shoot some macros. I truly lucked out since I got to spend quite a bit of time there before the wind and rain kicked in!

Azalea Lane is alive with blooms, both the azaleas and rhodies. I just love the subtly sweet smell when walking through there!

Yep, they're 10 month old twins!

Mom and Dad are champion baby wranglers, and now that Sam is crawling, Lucy shouldn't be too far behind. Super glue anyone?!? This session was held in their home, and it was great fun. I think I tired the babies out though, hopefully they took a nice long nap after I left!

During our session I will take quite a few pictures. Out of those, I select only the very best to beautifully edit and show my clients. It's only natural for you to wonder what I'm "holding back." So, I thought I'd show you a perfect example of the type of image that gets immediately deleted upon upload. As the saying goes: a picture is worth a thousand words, right?!?

If an image does not meet my artistic standards, and is not something that I would be proud to have my client display as a large canvas on their wall it doesn't make the cut.

Boy was I muddy, wet and cold when I got back from shooting today. My fingers would barely bend :( Once it started sprinkling I took cover under some trees and continued shooting the lower branches which weren't all wet....I just wasn't quite ready to call it a day!

Not sure what kind of tree this is, maybe an apple? Or a plum? I don't think it's a cherry....

Yep, the tulip fields :) The shooting conditions were a little less than ideal (full mid day sun, a little breezy, and dealing with the weekend crowds) but we still had a wonderful time! I'll go back in a week or two during an overcast mid-week day and seriously shoot.

She and I had a date about a month ago, but she was so over it by the time we were finished with photos with her mom and dad! Lucky me, I got to spend some more time with her earlier this week, and we concentrated just on her. At just 6 months old she's already quite a talker and loves her stuffed animals. I am just slightly jealous of her gorgeous peaches and cream complexion!

THREE • Seattle Child Photography

This handsome dude braved a chilly Seattle morning for his session. Poor guy was about ready to turn into a little ice cube, but we prevailed and ended up with some adorable images :) He's got the most beautiful eyes, they are so detailed and very expressive!

Every session there are a couple of images that completely pull at my heartstrings. This next one is one of those. He may not be the happiest little boy here, but the furrowed brow and bit of concern just makes me melt:

Quick visit to Seattle's Arboretum

This is such a gorgeous time of year to visit the arboretum. So many of the trees are beginning to flower - and the promise of spring is in the air.

I spend about an hour wandering and shooting one morning last week, and just as I was walking back to the car I spotted this branch hanging down with the beautiful brown of the tree trunk behind. I knew it would make a lovely photograph.

For those of you who don't like using flash when shooting macros, here's a perfect example of where it is helpful. Because this bloom was facing downward and I was shooting up into it (it was hanging above my head), the inside of it would have been muddy and dark had I shot using available light only. In a perfect world I would have side lit this to give it more depth, but I was limited with what I could do since I hadn't brought my tripod. So, I mounted my flash and diffuser on my camera, exposed for the scene, then dialed my flash WAY down, so all it did was give a little pop of light to the inside of the flower and balance some of the light coming from above. No harsh shadows, it didn't change the overall exposure - just a kiss of light.

Honestly, I don't think so! I always feel a little badly for my newborn parents because once they hand off their sweet baby they nearly have to pry him out of my arms to get him back *wink.* I also enjoy the down time while we wait for baby to settle in, it gives me a chance to get to know the parents better. Once again I got to work with a fantastic couple, and they are so relaxed and calm about the new parent thing!

I would imagine most parents walk away from a family session with two little ones age 4 and under wondering if "we got anything good." Even though this session was loosely controlled chaos *smile*, I think we got some GREAT ones!

Loved these two kiddos and their parents. Busy little Israel is almost 2 and just the absolute sweetest thing ever. Karl is just so personable, he's the type of kid you envision being the class president. And Mom and Dad, they just fit together so well, and obviously adore their boys!

Be prepared, vacation photos are going to be interspersed with regular blog updates for a while. I took a LOT of pictures (no big surprise)!

We were very happy to have Colin's cousin join us for a day....I sure wish we got to see her (and her brother and dad) more often! I have a photo of them on my family photo wall from when they were about 3 and 4 years old, came home and took a good, hard look at it, and boy have they changed a LOT in all those years. It blows me away how quickly the years have passed.....

This is one of those "you had to be there moments." We visited Santa Monica (while the theme song from the old TV show "Three's Company" ran through my head all morning). This pelican was just hanging out on the pier, being a well behaved photo op. So, I asked Colin to get close(ish) to him. Well, once Colin got within about 8 feet of the pelican he went into attack mode and scared us all. Guess even a pelican has it's limits. Sure wish I had caught the interaction between the two of them though ;)

This just makes me happy for no apparent reason other than it's my kid and I love his smile:

The light posts on Main Street were decorated with these gorgeous floral bouquets. As far as I could tell (they were up fairly high) these were live bouquets. Can you imagine the work that goes into maintaining them?

Hello blog, it's been a while • Vacation photos

Last week Brett and I went down to Southern CA and Colin came in from Michigan to join us. It was fantastic to see him, and he was very happy to escape the knee deep midwest snow and enjoy some sunshine with Mom and Dad. What a great little getaway! I tried VERY hard not to get too caught up the taking "the perfect pictures" and to relax a bit and just take snapshots. Easier said than done for sure!

If you know us at all, you know Disneyland would be part of any S. CA vacation for us. Even at almost 20, C still likes to ham it up with the characters. Minnie giving him a kiss:

My camera and I wandered off by ourselves towards the castle, and lo and behold I found a family of Mom, Dad, and baby ducks just hanging out. I loved that they had their own personal cast member with them being sure that they didn't get bothered or stepped on. Only at Disney :)

The guys humored me and went on Alice in Wonderland with me. Note the iPhone in Brett's hands? That thing is AWESOME on vacation. There a "MouseWait" app that shows the wait times at various rides. VERY cool! It saved our butts with the GPS and driving directions while going to various places around LA as well. I <3 my iPhone

This little guy is so social, if I didn't know better I'd say I caught him mid-sentence, don't you think? I love this image so much that I have to post it both in color and black and white. For some reason it really tugs at my heartstrings!

Putting a newish lens through it's paces with a S-WEET little boy • Seattle Child Photography

Elliot's Mom was kind enough to reply to a very last minute casting call earlier this week. My husband Brett had to be knocked out to have some dental work done, and since I had to stay within 15 minutes of the dental office for 3 HOURS that morning I had some serious time to kill! I decided to try out one of my lenses and see if I liked using it for toddlers/preschoolers. I love the lens for older kids and adults, but after giving it a workout with Elliot I think I like being closer to younger kiddos when I photograph them.

What a great sport Elliot was! It was pretty chilly out, and the University Village probably isn't all that interesting to an almost 4YO at 8:30 in the morning, but he was a pleasure to spend time with. Thanks so much Mom :)

Patience pays off • Seattle Child Photography

This particular session was a long time in the making, but boy our persistence paid off! We had an incredible morning for shooting in Pioneer Square, and Cameron was so much fun to hang out with! I love the toddler/preschooler age, they are little bundles of energy and so excited about things that we older folks take for granted.

He sat for, oh....about 2.5 seconds, but isn't the result stunning (thanks Dad for being goofy behind me):

I have to mention his outfits as well. I thought Mom did a fantastic job with the wardrobe selections. Cameron looks pulled together, comfortable, and absolutely adorable, modern yet at the same time classic, and when the family looks at these images hanging on their walls in 10, 15, or 30 years from now, they won't think "these look so 2010." ;)

There are times when kiddos are just having an off day, and then setting them in front of a camera can occasionally be the straw that broke the camel's back. If you can believe it, this sweet little cherub was having one of those tough days, and once we got a few family photos she was so over the whole photo shoot thing. She really tried her best, and while we tried everything we could to help her out, it became crystal clear it just wasn't going to work out on that particular day.

While rescheduling can be an inconvenience for all (especially Mom and Dad) I will not push any child to perform for the camera, the resulting images simply will not shine. I want your session to be as stress free as possible, and your images to be stunning and treasured for a lifetime! Mom, Dad, and I decided that another day would likely be a better choice for Miss Sophie, so we'll have fun with the camera in a few weeks.

She is such a little doll and has the most darling face, I can't wait to capture some amazing images for Mom and Dad! Isn't this beautiful:

I was supposed to be out of town this week, but a couple of weeks ago our plans changed and we rescheduled for March. Ended up that I still kept this week light on commitments, and as of right this moment I am caught up :) I know come tomorrow that probably won't be the case. But I am savoring this moment! Ok, on second thought, I do have a bunch of paperwork that needs doing, but it can wait, right?

Yesterday afternoon I had to go up to Woodinville, so I (of course) had to make a stop at one of my favorite nurseries, Molbaks. I'm just loving these colors!

And I have a little secret about yesterday's photo. I wish I had done a pull back shot of where I was, hopefully I can describe it adequately. One of the things I LOVE about macros is how well you can isolate your subject.

Yesterday's shot was from a small pot of crocuses at the nursery. All the crocuses were potted in dirty white plastic containers, so they were definitely not going to provide a nice backdrop. But, on the opposite side of the nursery table were some taller yellow plants. So, I took my little pot of crocuses and propped it up on 3 other pots below (that were set up as a triangle). It got my pot high enough that that delicious yellow complimented the purple of the crocus very nicely. And that yummy light from above? Just light filtering in through the corrugated plastic roofing. Typically I'm not a big fan of light coming in from above, but when a bloom opens upwards as a crocus does, I think it catches the light nicely! Lastly, I positioned myself so that the pistal had a purple petal behind it, otherwise the yellow would have been lost in the yellow background. That's it :) Not sure why I typed that, but hopefully it'll help someone!

I try very hard not to have regrets in life, but I will say that one of the few I do have is that I did not get professional photos of my son when he was a baby ( almost 20 years ago) and at that time I didn't have the ability to capture truly beautiful images myself.

Children grow and change almost before our eyes, and it is such a joy to have the opportunity to photograph each and every one of them! I absolutely love capturing images like the ones below, but have to fight that little twinge of jealousy because I don't have any of them for myself.

I got to spend a few delightful hours with 5 month old Finley and her Mom earlier this week. She is one of the most content babies I've had the pleasure of spending time with - lucky Mom and Dad! Look at those chubby cheeks, long eyelashes, and perfect little mouth....

My handsome husband helping me test out a new lens

I've been debating the 50mm 1.4 for quite some time. I've had the 1.8 for almost 4 years and it is quite the workhorse! I finally hit the buy button on the 1.4 and when it arrived this afternoon Brett was kind enough to let me take a few snaps of him with it. He even took off his glasses for me, which I know is tough for him because then he really cannot see a thing without them!

I'd typically never use this lens for headshots (there's definitely some distortion at close range), but I think it's going to be great for babies in studio!

I've got a baby victim....oops...I mean subject, coming over tomorrow afternoon to let me play around, and then a baby girl session again on Tuesday. The final verdict on the lens will be in on Tuesday night. I'm thinking it's going to be favorable ;) Look at the yummy bokeh, and it is sharp as a tack!

Oh Happy Baby • Seattle Baby Photography

First off, I was downtown today and the temp on the readerboard next to I-5 said 59 degrees at 1pm. Can you believe it? What a gorgeous day today has been! Pinch me, I must be dreaming, this is Seattle, isn't it?!?

For those of you who had a baby session with me prior to the first of this year, we worked in my living room. While it certainly worked well and we captured beautiful images, it was a pain to set up each time I had a session scheduled! Since that time I've set up a dedicated small studio space (just the right size for newborns and babies) in my home. Little Miss V was kind enough to come over and help me try it out a couple of weeks ago.

I love the wide eyed look in this first image. I'm sure I was doing something strange or making an odd noise to get her to look my way, and I can almost see the wheels turning in her head thinking "what in the WORLD is that crazy woman doing?!?"

Combining blogs

This month marks the beginning of the fourth year I have kept a photo blog. I never thought I would still be at it, but am so glad I am! It's very rewarding to go back and see my photographic journey.

Since this fall, I've had a difficult time keeping up my portraiture blog as well as my "personal" one, so I've decided to combine the two here. Hopefully it won't be too difficult for my clients to wade through. I plan on building a portraiture website this spring, but in the mean time I've imported my blog posts from the other blog here, and hopefully it will work!

That said, besides photographing adorable kids, I love shooting macros. It is a wonderfully relaxing creative outlet for me, so you'll see lots of those sprinkled throughout. If you're having a sleepless night some time, scroll back through the posts, there are a number of images I am very proud of!

Today has been an incredibly beautiful day, sunny and 56 degrees....one that helps me remember that our dreary gray weather actually will not last forever. Days like today almost trick me into thinking spring is just around the corner, as do these primroses. Aren't the colors gorgeous?

New Year's resolution?

I am not one to make New Year's resolutions, they're just TOO easy to break, and then feel like I let myself down.

That said, I am resolving (as a whole) to take more time to shoot more for myself this year. I got so caught up and busy this fall doing portraiture that I was overwhelmed and didn't have any time for ME. I've nipped that in the bud a bit and have cut back on the number of sessions I'm scheduling.

So, this year ought to be a lot more enjoyable for everyone than this fall was!

Couldn't resist picking up these paperwhites. Once the holidays are over I start looking for spring anywhere I can find it :)

It's not like riding a bicycle

I am so out of practice with shooting macros, and I found out the other day that it is definitely NOT like riding a bicycle. I ended up having to scrap quite a few files simply because my focus was crummy.

These itty bitty flowers are from a huge old jade plant. It is taller than I am and was started from a cutting in 1916! I never even knew that jade plants flowered at all, and the plant at the conservatory was covered with thousands of them. It was quite a sight!

I thoroughly enjoyed my morning with this family! Even though 6 week old Ruby took about two hours to settle, mom didn't get flustered one bit (or at least she didn't show it if she did). Then big sister Ramona and her Grandma arrived for her photo op with baby sister. I usually prefer not to photograph toddlers in a studio setting if I can help it, as they tend to be...well...bored quickly. Understandably, they aren't all that interested in the process. Ramona was the antithesis of the typical toddler, eager to please and unbelievably cooperative. Had it not been past lunchtime, and closing in quickly on nap time, I would have loved to have continued for a while longer :)

What to Wear? Winter Ideas:

Often one of the questions I am asked when a session is scheduled is; "what should s/he wear?" It's a great question, and shows that your child's portraits are important to you!

I love color, and coordinated pattern! Pattern as an accessory adds just that bit of spunk and personality to portraits. This time of year especially your child's outerwear is very important too.

When selecting clothing for multiple children, pick one or two colors that span all outfits, then add another color (or two) to each outfit. For example, 2 children - a boy and a girl. You could choose brown and white plus denim as the base for both outfits. Then add some blue, green, or red to the boy's outfit and add pink, turquoise, or purple to the girl's. Voila - your children's clothing coordinates but doesn't match!

You don't need to go out and purchase new clothing for your child's session, but here are a few ideas I've put together that you could use for inspiration from your child's own closet:

Jayden • Photography Session at Seattle's Seward Park

I love this age! Jayden is 2 1/2 years old, and is just a bundle of energy and personality! When he got out of the car to meet me, I told him how handsome he looked. He corrected me and replied: "my DADDY is handsome!" Too cute!

It was cold, and windy, and we were being chased by raindrops, but Jayden just kept on going. Each time he'd get muddy, he'd let Mom change his clothes right out there in the 40 degree temps. I've got to say, I'm looking forward to the spring when hopefully the weather won't be so much of an impact on sessions!

One thing I am very appreciative of is how flexible my families are when the weather turns sour! And this time of year it's much more often than I'd like. On the morning of their scheduled session, we called it 2 hours before it was supposed to take place due to rain and wind. Thankfully the next morning it was dry enough for us to get together.

Matthew is one very lucky boy! His parents absolutely adore him, and it shows, there is so much love shared between the three of them - soon to be four :)

Grayson • Rainy Day Photography at the Seattle Center

Grayson's Mom and I had planned to meet at Seward Park for his session, however about an hour beforehand it started raining. After some encouragement from his Mom that he really couldn't care less if it was raining or not, we met at the Seattle Center.

She was so right! He is a bundle of energy, very charming, and all boy through and through. He didn't mind if he was wet, and apparently doesn't feel the cold at all!

Hope you guys have a great time escaping the gloomy Seattle weather in Hawaii, Grayson's gallery should be ready to view when you get back. ALOHA!

Gabby the quintessential tween • Portrait photography at Seattle's Discovery Park

I loved spending time with Gabby and her Mom who is an old friend of mine and an amazing insurance agent - if you ever need a referral and you live in the Puget Sound region) let me know! She's saved us a bundle of money. I know, that sounds like a commercial, but it's true!

Mom's request was the Gabby didn't look too old in the pictures. Gabby however had her own ideas, and was a champion at posing. I'd love to take her out again (on a warmer day) just to shoot for fun! I think I got a good mix of both, and that both of them will be happy with the results.

Angie, I'll have all the proofs up soon and will email you when they're done. Thank you both for the fun morning - Gabby is a great girl!

Abandoned bunnies :(

I've recently rediscovered (thank you Julie) Seattle's Discovery Park. I can't really even describe it, it is huge, with miles of trails, and lovely picturesque places for taking photos.

However, every time I've been there I've seen bunnies, as in multiples of them. And these aren't wild bunnies, they were at some point people's pet bunnies whom they've abandoned. It makes me so sad for the bunnies and mad at the people who have left them to fend for themselves. Undoubtedly many will die (and probably a slow, painful death) from stress and simply from living outside.

As I was waiting for a friend to arrive the other day for her daughter's session, I couldn't help myself from photographing one of them.

On a brighter note, this is just a head's up that this Friday is the first of 3 cut-off dates to order your desk calendars. Info is over that-a-way ----->

Kate (and her Mommy) were just too much fun to hang out with. This little 5 year old is so vivacious and has personality to spare :) I loved being able to capture not just what she looks like, but more importantly who she IS at this point in time!

I think I'm going to nickname him Mellow Milo because he is one very laid back dude. We had a session that lasted about an hour and a half, and he was a champ!

I shouldn't even be looking at these until I finish proofing another session, but I couldn't resist his amazing blue eyes! I'll put a few more on my business blog in a couple of days.

He's going to make a terrific Grandpa some day...

I've shared the following sentiment before here, but I sure wish I had been into photography when Colin was little. I missed capturing so many little moments just like these:

Colin, did you notice that Dad's getting his Dr Suess fix? Pretty soon he's hoping to get her interested in Fox in Sox ;D

She and her Mommy braved the rain, gray, and cold weather in order to fit our session into their busy schedule! I think miss Anna thought we were nuts, but I'll be darned if she isn't about the cutest two year old ever :)

Yes, it would have been nice if her hand wasn't to her mouth, but so much expression can be shared when just the eyes are the focus. I see mischievousness in them :)

Pat, you asked about my calendars. I haven't had a chance to photograph them yet, but I hope to this weekend, so stay tuned next week :) I can't believe I've shoved this to the side for over 2 weeks, yikes!

We really lucked out Saturday morning, it was a beautiful (albeit chilly) fall morning for an outing! The family was hoping we'd get something suitable for their Christmas cards, and since Mom and Dad were pretty laid back about just what the photos would look like (good thing too because the kids found many much more interesting things to do at the park than having their pictures made), I think we got it!

A red letter day for me!

You're probably thinking; "but Lauren, these are just snapshots, what are you talking about?"

I've never felt the need to shoot RAW. My exposures with jpegs have never been a problem. BUT....I've been shooting things and people where I have been able to take the time to make sure my exposure is good prior to shooting. Now that I'm shooting more active young kids, I think I'll need the little bit of leeway in exposre that shooting RAW affords.

So, I set my sights on learning RAW and Lightroom this weekend, and I DID IT!

"What's the big deal?" you're probably wondering.

I don't learn technical things easily, my brain just doesn't process that sort of information well. Give me something creative and I'm all over it, technical, and it's a good sized struggle to muscle through it.

So, it's a red letter day for me, my first 3 RAW shapsots, edited in Lightroom :) Constructive criticism on the editing (especially color and contrast) is VERY welcomed!

Julie, Emma and I explored Discovery Park Sunday morning, checking out spots to use for her family's shoot next weekend. What a gorgeous place! I'm really hoping these trees don't lose their leaves before then, can't you just envision the entire family framed by these beautiful branches?

Missing the kid

Colin called on Tuesday to see if we could find him a cheap flight to come home for fall break this weekend. We've never had a call like that - I think he's feeling the "sophomore slump" and just would like a little family time. Of course last minute air fares were very steep, so unfortunately he's not coming.

I was getting excited about the possibility of spending unexpected time with him, and especially about surprising Brett with his arrival, so there is some disappointment here. Only 2 more months till winter break.....

Anyhow, because that phone call prompted me to miss him more than is typical, I pulled out my Michigan cup for coffee Wednesday afternoon. It just gives me the warm fuzzies when I use it, and makes me feel a little closer to Colin. I don't use it often, it's very large, and with it's wide mouth I tend to slosh coffee all over the place (yes, I can be a bit of a klutz at times).

In case you're wondering, my afternoon cup (I "need" one cup sometime between 2 and 3 pm daily) during the fall and winter months is always an americano with sugar-free hazelnut syrup and a splash of half and half :)

PS, the picture from yesterday is (I think) some rose hips from a rosa rugosa. I bet that Pat will know for sure :) Pat....? Actually, maybe not, the branches were awfully far off the ground to be that....
